Dr. Mark Long became Dean of the UCR School of Public Policy in January 2023, following 18 years as a professor and associate dean at the University of Washington’s Evans School of Public Policy and Governance. His research examines the effects of public policies and the costs and benefits of those policies, with a focus on education, economic opportunity, and social mobility. His work has explored topics including college financial aid, educational attainment, school and college quality, gender disparities in education, affirmative action and minimum wage policy. 

Since becoming Dean, Dr. Long has led the School through its 10-year anniversary and a period of continued growth, including the launch of the Center for Community Solutions, the opening of a new student lounge and advising space, and the integration of the Science to Policy program into the School. As the School of Public Policy enters its second decade, Dr. Long’s goals for 2026–27 include strengthening the School’s national reputation, expanding opportunities for students to engage with policymakers, and increasing the reach and impact of faculty research. His vision is to position the School as one that connects impactful research and education with policy-based solutions for communities in Inland Southern California and beyond.
